Paralegal Certificates and Certification Exams, Kept Apart

"Paralegal certification" means two different things, and school ads use them interchangeably. One is a certificate a school awards. The other is a credential a professional body awards by exam. We built BestParalegalCertification.com to cover both and keep them separate: ABA-approved programs ranked on federal tuition, graduation and completions data, and the certification exams explained from each certifying body's own rules.

The Problem

Certificate, Certification or License: Three Words Readers Confuse

A reader searching for paralegal certification may want a school program, an exam, or neither. No state requires a certification exam to work as a paralegal, and the site quotes the ABA saying so. The homepage opens by separating the certificate a school awards, the certification a professional body awards, and the license a few states issue for limited-practice legal paraprofessionals.

Only programs on the ABA's approved list are ranked. The ABA directory has no federal identifier, so each entry was matched to IPEDS by name and state, with 46 matched by hand and a recorded reason for each. Programs are scored only against others at the same award level, and only when tuition, graduation rate and paralegal completions are all present. Sponsored school listings are ads, and they are never scored or ranked.

72 Approved Certificates, Scored on In-State Price

The national certificate ranking scores 72 ABA-approved programs in 26 states on in-state tuition and fees (40%), graduation rate (30%) and paralegal graduates (30%). Pasadena City College leads at 91.4, at $1,180 a year for a resident. The top 10 get a card with the program as its school describes it, and the page explains which certificates are compared on published prices instead of ranked, such as those for people who already hold a bachelor's degree.

All 220 Approved Programs, by State

The directory lists every program on the ABA's approved list across 43 states and DC, with each school's federal record beside it. It explains what approval does and does not mean, how a program earns it, which programs have closed or stopped admitting, and what each program awards: 166 offer a certificate, 167 an associate's degree and 56 a bachelor's.
