HR Degrees and HR Certifications, Weighed Together

In human resources, a degree is only half of the credential question. Employers also look for SHRM or HRCI certification. We built HRDegree.org to rank HR programs at every level from federal data, then connect those rankings to the certifications, careers, and pay that a degree is supposed to lead to.

The Problem

HR Programs Hide Under Several Program Codes

Human resources is not one line in the federal data. Programs are filed as human resources management, labor and industrial relations, organizational behavior, and related codes, and many sit inside business schools. The site identifies them by CIP code so the rankings cover HR-specific programs rather than general business degrees, and it ranks each degree level on its own.

The scoring needed field-specific quality signals. The five-factor index gives curriculum quality 25 of its 100 points: 15 for SHRM curriculum alignment, plus 10 for AACSB or 5 for ACBSP business school accreditation. A program needs at least three IPEDS completions to be ranked, and for-profit schools take a published 35% score reduction.

The Research Tools

Two Rankings for the Two Ways HR Professionals Go Back to School

Many readers already work in HR and want the master's that moves them into management. Many also need a program they can finish around a full-time job. Each question gets its own ranking of 50 programs.

Master's in HR rankings

Fifty Programs and the Pay Gap That Justifies Them

The master's ranking scores 50 accredited programs using SHRM alignment, IPEDS 2023, and BLS data. Its opening frames the decision with the BLS gap between HR specialists at $72,910 and HR managers at $140,030. The quick summary names the top programs with their tuition and graduation rates, then the page covers MS versus MBA, tuition and aid, and state options.

Online HR rankings

Fifty Online Programs, and the Formats Behind Them

The online ranking scores 50 programs using SHRM alignment, IPEDS 2023 online completion data and program quality. Rutgers University-New Brunswick ranks first at 88.7, followed by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities; 29 of the 50 are SHRM-aligned and 35 are AACSB-accredited. Before the list, the page explains how asynchronous and competency-based programs differ, using WGU's flat $4,030 term as an example.

Who Uses the Research

Sources, Resources, and Their Readers

Link earning starts with the person who would need the resource. The architecture makes that path explicit instead of publishing content first and hunting for a reason to promote it later.

Primary Evidence Published Resource Who Uses It
IPEDS 2023 completions, graduation rates and institutional data Program identification by CIP code and the five-factor ranking index Students comparing HR programs at every degree level
SHRM Academic Initiative and HRCI Curriculum alignment signals and certification guides Graduates planning for SHRM-CP, PHR and senior credentials
