Every U.S. Medical Assisting Program, Checked One by One

Medical assisting programs look alike from the outside, but cost, externship hours, and accreditation vary a lot, and accreditation decides who can sit for the CMA (AAMA) exam. We built MedicalAssistantSchool.net to check every program we could find. It lists 1,340 programs at 989 schools, each read on the school's own pages, with accreditation taken from the CAAHEP and ABHES lists themselves.

The Problem

Accreditation Decides Which Exam a Graduate Can Take

Plenty of schools say their graduates can take the CMA exam. The site only repeats that claim when a CAAHEP or ABHES list actually covers the program and credential, which is true for 339 of the 1,340 programs. The starting list combined every school that reported medical assisting awards to IPEDS with every campus on both accreditors' lists, and each one was then checked on its own website.

Each program records its credential, format, schedule, length, externship, skills taught, and the exams its page names. Cost is shown with its basis. Where a school publishes only a per-credit rate, the site multiplies it by the program's credits and labels the result estimated. Ranked lists state their single measure, such as lowest cost or shortest length, above the list.

The Research Tools

Two Lists for the Two Questions Applicants Ask First

Most readers want to know whether they can study online and whether a program leads to the CMA exam. The online and hybrid list and the accredited list answer each with counts, medians, and every program behind them.

Online and Hybrid

508 Online Programs, Nearly All of Them Hybrid

The online list answers the question most readers arrive with: can you become a medical assistant online? Of 508 programs with an online component, 486 are hybrid and only 13 are fully online, and every one still requires in-person skills training or an externship. A stat row gives 417 schools, a 39 week median length, a $17,950 median cost, and a 180 hour median externship, and the page notes that only 80 of the 508 are CAAHEP or ABHES accredited.

Accredited Programs

The 339 Programs That Open the CMA Route

The accredited list covers programs in 42 states: 319 accredited by CAAHEP and 20 by ABHES. A stat row gives the school count, median length, median estimated cost, and median externship, and separate sections pull out the most affordable and the largest accredited programs.

Who Uses the Research

Sources, Resources, and Their Readers

Link earning starts with the person who would need the resource. The architecture makes that path explicit instead of publishing content first and hunting for a reason to promote it later.

Primary Evidence Published Resource Who Uses It
Official program, admissions, and tuition pages, reviewed October 2026 Credential, length, externship, skills, exams named, and published cost Students comparing programs near them
CAAHEP and ABHES lists, plus AAMA, AMT, NHA, and NCCT eligibility pages Accreditation status and the quoted certification routes Applicants checking CMA eligibility
IPEDS 2022-23, BLS OEWS May 2025, and studentaid.gov School size, medical assistant pay, and federal aid figures in the calculator Readers working out cost and payback
