A Plain Guide to Billing and Coding Training and Credentials

People drawn to medical billing and coding usually ask the same things: which certification employers want, what training costs, and what the job pays where they live. We built MedicalBillingandCodingClasses.org as a guide to those decisions. It compares the five main credentials, prices each training path, and gives every state its own page with local pay and schools.

5 certifications compared CPC, CCA, CBCS, CCS, and CPB
50 state guides Local pay, schools, and certification notes
$50,250 median pay cited BLS, medical records specialists
194,800 U.S. jobs cited BLS count for the occupation

The Problem

Three Credential Bodies and Prices That Swing by Thousands

A newcomer meets AAPC, AHIMA, and NHA credentials with different exams, membership rules, and renewal cycles, plus training that can cost $1,500 at a community college or far more at a for-profit school for similar material. The site explains the difference between billing and coding first, then lays out which credential fits outpatient, inpatient, or billing work.

Pay and job figures come from the BLS occupation for medical records specialists. Certification salaries come from the AAPC 2025 Salary Survey, labeled as such. Exam fees and membership costs are listed per credential so a reader can total the first-year cost before choosing a program.

The Research Tools

Pick the Credential, Then Look at Your State

Most readers decide in two steps: which certification to pursue, and what training and pay look like locally. Each step has its own hub.

Certification Comparison

CPC, CCA, CBCS, CCS, and CPB Side by Side

The comparison page puts all five credentials in one table by issuing body, level, focus, exam fee, and membership. It covers total first-year cost, salary by credential from the AAPC survey, stacking credentials, and which one suits outpatient coding, hospital inpatient work, or billing.

Compare the coding certifications
The comparison opens by naming all five credentials and their cost range.

State Guides

A Page for Every State, Filterable by Region

The state hub links all 50 state guides and filters them by South, West, Midwest, and Northeast. Each state page brings together local salary figures, schools listed in IPEDS, certification notes, and a step-by-step path to getting started there.

Who Uses the Research

Sources, Resources, and Their Readers

Link earning starts with the person who would need the resource. The architecture makes that path explicit instead of publishing content first and hunting for a reason to promote it later.

Primary Evidence Published Resource Who Uses It
BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics Median pay, job counts, and projections for medical records specialists Career changers checking whether the work pays
AAPC 2025 Salary Survey Pay by credential and the certified versus non-certified gap Readers choosing between certifications
AAPC, AHIMA, and NHA exam pages, plus IPEDS Exam fees, membership rules, and schools named on state pages Students pricing training and certification
