Field Offices Linked to the Hearing Offices Behind Them

When a Social Security appeal reaches the hearing level, the case moves to a hearing office most people have never heard of. We built SSOfficeLocation.org as an independent directory of all 1,231 SSA offices that names the hearing office behind 1,120 of them, ties every ZIP code to the field office SSA assigns it, and adds two quick tools for deciding whether a trip is needed at all.

The Problem

Your Field Office Decides Where a Hearing Happens

SSA asks people to file an appeal through their field office, then sends the case to the hearing office that serves that field office. The two halves of that route sit in separate SSA locators. The site joins them: it reads the data behind SSA's Hearing Office Locator, captured October 6, 2026, and links 1,120 field office pages to the hearing office that handles their appeals.

The ZIP code layer is built the same way. Each of 33,780 ZIP codes was looked up in SSA's Office Locator on October 1, 2026, and the office it returned fills the ZIP list on that office's page. Where SSA returns no office, the tool lists the nearest ones by distance and says so. City pages, which mostly repeat offices that already have a page, stay open to Bing and ask Google not to index them.

Three Ways to Book, Compared, Plus the Walk-In Option

SSA has asked people to book before coming in since January 6, 2025. The guide compares SSA's online questionnaire, the local office line SSA recommends, and the national number (1-800-772-1213, weekdays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.), then covers changing or canceling, walking in, and picking the right office type: 1,188 field offices for most business and 7 card centers for cards only.
