Most people who choose a BSW want to work soon after graduation, and some want a faster MSW later. We built BSWDegree.com around both plans: every CSWE bachelor's program checked on its school's site, whether the reader's state licenses BSW graduates, and which schools let a BSW flow straight into their own advanced standing MSW.

The Problem

Accreditation Decides What a BSW Can Lead To

A social work bachelor's only opens a state license or MSW advanced standing when CSWE accredits it. The site takes status from CSWE's directory alone: 605 options are accredited, 26 are in candidacy or pre-candidacy and carry a label instead of the badge, and six majors with no CSWE status are kept out of the lists and tools, with a note on their state page explaining why.

Cost was the other problem. Only some schools publish a per-credit rate for the BSW itself, so the site shows that rate where it exists and the school's federal tuition and fees figure for 2023-24 everywhere else, each labeled with its source. The two are never mixed, so a reader always knows which number they are looking at.

The guide lays out the route as numbered steps: a CSWE-accredited BSW, the major, a field practicum of at least 400 hours (430 is the median among 161 programs that state their hours), the state board application, and the exam. It shows that 42 of 52 jurisdictions issue a bachelor's-level license and 31 name the ASWB Bachelors exam, with a state table of credentials, then explains how advanced standing shortens an MSW.
