Two Social Work Doctorates, Compared on the Same Page

A social work doctorate is really two different degrees. The DSW is a practice doctorate for working MSW holders, and the PhD is a research degree that is often funded. We built DSWDegree.net to verify every program of both kinds and to help a reader work out which one they actually want before they compare schools.

The Problem

A DSW and a PhD Answer Different Career Questions

Searchers often treat the DSW and the PhD as interchangeable. They are not. Across the programs on the site, the median DSW is 48 credits and most end in a capstone, while 69 of the 77 PhDs end in a dissertation. Money works differently too: the DSW is usually paid for, and 46 PhDs state full funding. The site keeps the two in separate lists and puts them side by side wherever the choice matters.

Accreditation needed care as well. CSWE accredits practice doctorates but not PhDs, so PhD programs carry no CSWE status at all. Among DSWs, 4 are accredited and 11 are in candidacy or pre-candidacy, and each status gets its own visual treatment so candidacy is never read as accreditation. Programs with paused admission keep their pages but drop out of every ranking and tool result.

This page sorts the 46 social work PhDs that publish funding by how firm the offer is, separating programs that promise a package to every admitted student from those that say assistantships are available. Published stipends run from $18,000 at Albany to a base of at least $37,853 at WashU, and the page ranks the programs that state an annual figure.
