Three Social Science Fields, Ranked on Their Own Terms

Sociology, anthropology, and political science teach different methods, and a degree search should respect that. We built SocialSciences.org to rank each field separately at every degree level, then connect those rankings to state directories, career guides, and a methodology readers can check.

12 field and degree-level rankings Associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral lists for three fields
20 ranked schools in every list Each school appears once per list
50 state directories 49 states plus Washington, DC
8 career guides Entry routes for bachelor's and graduate study

The Problem

Similar Subjects Need Separate Comparisons

Social science majors share a classroom vocabulary but not a curriculum. A sociology bachelor's degree leans on statistics and research methods, while an anthropology program may expect fieldwork or lab time. A single combined ranking would blur those differences. We scored each field and degree level on its own, so a bachelor's list never competes with a doctorate.

Readers also need to see how a score is built. The methodology page names the federal records behind each list, the rules a school must meet to qualify, and the measures and weights for each degree level. Every ranking links back to it, so a shortlist can be checked rather than taken on faith.

The Research Tools

Rankings and State Directories Serve Different Searches

A field ranking answers which programs are strongest nationally. A state directory answers which of those programs are close to home.

A Ranking That Shows Its Scoring

The sociology bachelor's page scores 843 schools and publishes a 20-school shortlist. Five measures drive the score: graduation rate, published cost, graduate earnings, program standing, and degrees awarded. The page sets the weights beside the results, then adds guidance on coursework, concentrations, capstones, and transfer credit.

State discovery

Every State Uses the Same Scores

The state index lists 138 state rankings across 49 states and Washington, DC. Each state card shows its count of ranked schools and the number of fields covered. State lists reuse the national scores, so a school keeps the same number wherever a reader finds it.

Who Uses the Research

Sources, Resources, and Their Readers

Link earning starts with the person who would need the resource. The architecture makes that path explicit instead of publishing content first and hunting for a reason to promote it later.

Primary Evidence Published Resource Who Uses It
NCES Classification of Instructional Programs and IPEDS records Field definitions, degree-level rankings, and state lists Students comparing sociology, anthropology, and political science
Official school degree pages and course requirements Program examples and coursework comparisons Applicants checking methods, fieldwork, and capstone expectations
BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook and OEWS wage data Career guides with duties, pay, and entry education Readers connecting a degree to the work it can lead toward
