Software Engineering Rankings Built on Published Federal Data

SoftwareEngineeringPrograms.com compares software engineering and computer science degrees on published federal data instead of reputation. We built the program finder, nine ranked lists, 51 state pages and 50 city guides, plus career and salary reports that put local BLS pay next to the degrees that lead to each job.

1,189 programs tracked Software engineering and computer science, from NCES IPEDS 2024

The Problem

A Degree Title Has to Mean What It Says

Plenty of computer science degrees carry a software engineering track, and plenty of schools file the two together. We started from federal IPEDS records, then checked each one against the school’s own pages. Of 186 software engineering records at the bachelor’s and master’s levels, 48 were excluded after that check, and the site publishes each exclusion with its reason.

The rankings use figures a reader can look up. Bachelor’s programs are scored out of 100 on completion rate, average net price, ABET accreditation, and graduates a year. Only programs with all four figures are ranked, so a score never rests on a guess.

The Research Tools

The Ranking and the Method Sit Side by Side

The bachelor’s ranking shows how a published score reads for a student. The methodology shows how it was built and what was left out.

Bachelor’s ranking

A Score Out of 100 With the Numbers Behind It

The bachelor’s ranking opens with 75 ranked programs, 35 of them ABET-accredited, and a median net price of $20,696. Key takeaways, cost comparisons, a state breakdown, and a section on jobs and pay follow the table, so a student moves from the ranking to a decision without leaving the page.

Methodology

Every Exclusion Is Published With Its Reason

The methodology explains which programs qualify, where each figure comes from, and how each rubric scores bachelor’s and master’s degrees, online and on campus. It lists the 48 excluded records school by school and names what the site chooses not to score, so a reader can check the work.

Who Uses the Research

Sources, Resources, and Their Readers

Link earning starts with the person who would need the resource. The architecture makes that path explicit instead of publishing content first and hunting for a reason to promote it later.

Primary Evidence Published Resource Who Uses It
NCES IPEDS completions, tuition, and outcome data, checked against each school’s own pages Bachelor’s, master’s, and online software engineering rankings Prospective students, parents, and school counselors
