Weight-Loss Medicines and Coverage, Read From the Label

Wegovy, Zepbound, Ozempic and compounded copies get talked about as if they were the same thing. They aren't, and the coverage rules differ again. We built WeightLoss.help to explain the medicines from their FDA prescribing information, the cost from the manufacturers' own price pages, and the coverage from CMS and each state's Medicaid documents, then pair it with a finder for doctors who treat obesity. The site is not a clinic or pharmacy and gives no medical advice.

9 FDA-approved medicines For chronic weight management, each with its own page
4,936 practices in the doctor finder From the CMS NPI Registry and Medicare Part D data
51 Medicaid programs checked All 50 states and DC, from each state's own documents
$50 a month through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge For eligible Part D enrollees, with its criteria explained

The Problem

Brand Names, Diabetes Drugs and Compounded Copies Get Mixed Up

A reader asking about a GLP-1 is usually sorting out three things at once: which drugs are approved for weight loss, what they cost without insurance, and whether Medicare or Medicaid will pay. The site separates them. Ozempic and Mounjaro pages say at the top that they are approved for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss. Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide get FDA's position only, and no compounding pharmacy is named or linked.

Doses appear only as the label states them, and the site never suggests one of its own. A weight-loss figure appears only as printed in the label's trial results, with the trial named. There are no testimonials or before-and-after photos. Each drug and each state has one research record with the value, source, link and checked date, so a price or coverage rule reads the same on every page that uses it.

The Research Tools

The Drug Table and the State Coverage Map

Two pages carry most of the comparison: one lines up the medicines, the other answers whether a state's Medicaid program pays for them.

Medications

Every Approved Weight-Loss Medicine in One Table

The medications hub lists the nine drugs FDA has approved for chronic weight management, from Wegovy and Zepbound to Contrave, Qsymia, phentermine and orlistat. The table shows each ingredient, how it is taken according to the label, and the manufacturer's list price where one is published. Ozempic and Mounjaro sit in a separate group marked as diabetes medicines.

Compare the weight-loss medications
The medications table pairs each drug's label dosing with its published list price.

Medicaid Coverage

Which State Medicaid Programs Cover GLP-1s for Weight Loss

Of the 51 Medicaid programs checked, 10 cover GLP-1s such as Wegovy or Zepbound for weight loss, always with prior authorization. The page explains how those states decide who qualifies, what many of the others still cover for heart risk, MASH or sleep apnea, which states changed their rules in 2025 and 2026, and where bariatric surgery fits.

Check Medicaid coverage by state
The coverage page answers the yes-or-no question first, then breaks it down by state.

Who Uses the Research

Sources, Resources, and Their Readers

Link earning starts with the person who would need the resource. The architecture makes that path explicit instead of publishing content first and hunting for a reason to promote it later.

Primary Evidence Published Resource Who Uses It
FDA prescribing information on DailyMed, and FDA statements Medication pages, dose schedules and the compounded GLP-1 guide Readers comparing medicines before talking to a clinician
CMS, Medicare.gov and state Medicaid program documents Medicare, Medicare GLP-1 Bridge and state-by-state Medicaid pages Medicare and Medicaid enrollees checking coverage
CMS NPPES NPI Registry and Medicare Part D Prescribers, 2024 The doctor finder and practice lists on state and city pages People looking for a clinician who treats obesity

Project Scope

What We Built

  • Medication pages for nine FDA-approved weight-loss drugs, plus Ozempic and Mounjaro marked as diabetes medicines.
  • Medicaid coverage findings for all 51 programs, with state pages that add bariatric surgery and the state employee plan.
  • A ZIP code finder for 4,936 weight-management practices built from federal CMS data, with no ratings or paid placement.
  • Four tools: an eligibility checker, a GLP-1 cost estimator, a dose schedule planner and a coverage checker.
