Ecommerce Web Design

Ecommerce web design with the before and after shown.

Most ecommerce agencies show you Shopify themes. We show you a store we actually rebuilt: the slow theme it escaped, the hand-coded storefront it became, and the design decisions in between, a buy button that never scrolls away, collection pages built to rank, and a checkout nothing gets in the way of.

A Real Store Rebuild, Before and After

Herb Stomp is a Portland botanicals retailer that came to us on a dragging WooCommerce theme. We rebuilt it as a hand-coded storefront with the catalog, compliance, and content wired in properly. Both versions are below, tap to compare:

Before: the theme it escaped

A stock WooCommerce theme carrying plugin weight on every page, slow enough to cost rankings and carts at the same time.

After: the hand-coded storefront

A custom build with a filterable, lab-tested catalog, a research library wired to products, and the 4.8-star review base shoppers see up front.

The signature detail

The Buy Button Never Scrolls Away

Shoppers on product pages read: descriptions, lab results, reviews. On most stores, the moment they scroll to research is the moment the add-to-cart disappears. On Herb Stomp’s build the purchase action stays pinned the whole way down, one of a dozen conversion decisions the rebuild made on purpose.

The Anatomy of a Storefront That Sells

Ecommerce design is a chain of small decisions between landing and checkout, and every weak link leaks revenue. The ones that matter most:

  • Collection pages treated as money pages, named the way people search, with real copy, because category searches dwarf brand searches and Google answers them with collections.
  • Product pages that answer before they ask, shipping, stock, lab results or specs, reviews, all visible without a click.
  • A cart that never fights the customer. Persistent buy actions, no surprise fees at the end, guest checkout that works.
  • Content wired to the catalog, guides that rank for research searches and link every product they mention, the engine behind Herb Stomp’s 37-guide library.
  • Trust made visible, real reviews, policies in plain sight, and for regulated products, compliance built into the design instead of bolted on.

A Herb Stomp collection page: filterable by what matters to the shopper, ranked for what the category is called, and selling on the same screen.

Hand-Coded Storefronts, Because Theme Bloat Costs Carts

Store themes ship carrying every feature anyone might use, and your customers pay for it in load time. Amazon-conditioned shoppers don’t wait. We write the code ourselves:

  • Sub-second product pages, on the phones where most shopping happens.
  • Server-rendered pages Google can read, no JavaScript fog hiding your catalog from the crawler.
  • Product schema on everything, price, stock, and review stars in the results and readable by AI shopping assistants.
  • Your platform, your call. We work on Shopify and WooCommerce and build custom storefronts when a store outgrows its theme, exactly what Herb Stomp did.

The Lighthouse targets every build ships against. Hand-coded pages don’t carry the page-builder bloat that makes these scores impossible.

Our ecommerce web design process

How an Ecommerce Build Runs

Catalog size sets the timeline, but the shape is the same: structure first, then the build, then a migration that protects every ranking and order flow:

Week 1

Discovery & architecture

  • Catalog, collections, and search language mapped
  • Platform call: Shopify, Woo, or custom
  • Migration plan for URLs and rankings
Weeks 2-4

Design & build

  • Hand-coded templates for every page type
  • Collection and product copy structured to rank
  • Cart and checkout flows tuned
Week 5

Migration & launch

  • Products, orders, and customers moved intact
  • Redirects protecting every ranking URL
  • Revenue analytics wired from day one
After launch

It starts selling

  • Organic revenue attributed by page and query
  • Content-to-catalog engine can begin
  • Iterations shipped by us, fast

Revenue Attribution From the First Order

Every build ships with GA4 and Search Console wired together, so organic revenue is credited to the pages and searches that produced it. Wholesale and contact inquiries land in Persilio, our own lead software, included free.
